We step into Black History Month intentionally making space for celebration of Black Joy, Pride and Success, while also taking time to reflect on our role in making sure early learning spaces are not only inclusive and culturally competent, but actively anti-racist.

Education, care, and welfare systems have historically been used to uphold structures that disproportionately harm Black communities. As part of these systems, early childhood educators and child care workers are responsible for creating safety and belonging for Black children and families. Early childhood education can play a key role in disrupting dominant narratives and building a kinder, more just world.

It is extremely important that we understand that anti-Black racism is rooted in the same colonial, patriarchal and oppressive ideologies that continue undervalue education and care. We must constantly remind one another of the intricate connections between these issues and how they impact all our lives everyday.

The work of the AECEO explicitly aims to be anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and inclusive to honour and acknowledge the diverse perspectives and gifts of our community members. During this month and beyond, the AECEO is committed to supporting Black leadership in building an anti-racist and culturally safe system of early learning and child care that supports children, families, and educators.

As your professional association, the AECEO aims to continue creating safe spaces for our community to learn and grow together, and remains committed to fighting for the wages and work protections that reflect the important role you play in building safer communities for everyone.
